Ruth’s Fifth Class recently had the opportunity to take part in a fascinating lesson all about the census, led by a very special guest — the father of one of our pupils, who works with the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
During his visit, he introduced the class to the purpose and importance of the national census, explaining how it helps the government plan for services like schools, transport, and healthcare. The children were shown a real census form and learned about the kind of information it collects, both today and in the past.
To make the experience even more interactive, the class completed a mini census of their own. This allowed pupils to explore questions about their households, pets, languages spoken at home, and more — helping them see how data is collected and used in real life.
The session also included a look at the history of the census in Ireland, giving the children an appreciation for how data collection has evolved over time and why it remains such an important part of national planning.
We’re very grateful to our guest for taking the time to share his knowledge and make the topic come to life in such an engaging and memorable way.
