Dear Parents/Guardians,

What a wonderful and amazing week this has been for the pupils, staff and parents/guardians in SETNS and we still have the Talent Contest on Friday…more about all this further on in the newsletter!

We are delighted to welcome Alison Ginnell back to SETNS. Last year Alison worked with us as a mainstream class teacher and as part of the SEN team.

Tuesday was a very memorable day out in Croke Park for the SETNS community, thanks to the success of our senior GAA team. They have made history by being the first Educate Together team to lift a shield in Croke Park. Thanks to our fantastic supporters, staff, pupils and parents, for their enthusiastic and sporting cheers and chants, both in Croke Park and in school. Thank you also to the team mentors Eibh and David supported by Siobhan for their commitment to preparing the team for the final. We had a celebratory assembly today where words of congratulations from the Board of Management and former principal, Gerard Kelly were read out to the children and staff. As an acknowledgement of their success, the team was brought to McDonald’s for lunch yesterday and as you can imagine, they were delighted with this. Gaelscoil Bhrian Bhoroimhe also had success in Croke Park this week so we have  organised for a photograph of both teams to be taken today…Comhgairdeachas Fhoireann GSBB!

Parent/Teacher Meetings 5th and 6th December

By now you will have received the scheduled time for your child’s parent/teacher meeting. We strongly encourage you to attend these meetings as they are a valuable opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and to discuss, on a one-to-one basis, your child’s progress and development in school. We would ask you to please arrive punctually to your meeting  and knock on the door at you appointed time in order to ensure the smooth and efficient running of both afternoons.

“Bring a Bag to School” – Recycling Bag Collection 3rd December (8.20a.m. – 2.30p.m.)

Hopefully you have the bags almost ready to bring to school…this is an easy way to generate cash for our school and our chosen charity – LauraLynn House “Ireland’s only children’s hospice”.  We are looking for unwanted clothing and other items that you no longer require. List of accepted items; Clothes – Have to be clean, dry & reusable, Curtains, Bedding (Except duvets & Pillows), Towels, Paired shoes & Trainers, Handbags and Belts. Books – must be in a separate bag/box to the above items

 Talent Show

We are looking forward to this year’s Talent Show tomorrow Friday 30th November. The children are hugely excited about this school event and have already enjoyed participating in the auditions held last week. Parents/guardians have been asked to sign permission slips for acts such as breakdancing and gymnastics. The Talent Show is a great opportunity for pupils to show off their many talents!!!

Coffee Morning (1st Class) – Change of Date

Please note a change of date for the Coffee Morning for 1st Class parents which will now be on 7th December from 8.40a.m. to 9.15a.m. We changed this date as the Talent Contest will be taking place in the hall and we needed to set up the stage and floor areas.  Apologies for any inconvenience caused and I hope that we will still meet  with you on the 7th December.

Winter Fair Friday 14th December

It’s hard to believe that it’s this time of year again…the SETNS Winter Fair will take place on Friday 14th December from 8.30a.m. to 3 p.m. PTA Newsletter to follow with details. The PTA would appreciate if you would drop in raffle donations/craft items to the PTA kitchen in the mornings at 8:30 a.m. leading up to the Fair (from Tuesday 11th December). Baked goods can be dropped into the hall on the morning of the fair from 8:15 a.m.

Weather – Snow Action Plan/Torrential Rain/Frost

As the weather is becoming increasing wintery it’s timely to revisit arrangements for pupils’ safe arrival to school and safe exit from school. Please read the following carefully.

  • Please see attached Snow Plan in the event of a heavy Snowfall.
  • In the event of Heavy Rain children will be allowed to enter the school hall from 8.20am via the side doors near to the front reception area. Children will then be brought to class at 8.30 a.m. by their class teacher.
  • On Frosty Mornings the path to the rear of the school will be salted by our caretakers Aaron and Peter. Please ensure that your child does not run/slide on what may be slippery paths/yards. Cones will cordon off any identified slippery areas.

Infections and Illnesses

Please note that we have had a case of Chicken Pox, Gastroenteritis and suspected Winter

Vomiting bug in Junior Infant classes (pupils may also have siblings in older classes). Should you have any concerns please consult your GP. We would ask that you inform the school if your child has a medically confirmed infectious illness so that we can continue to communicate this to the school community.

Morning Lines

Thank you for ensuring that your child is on time and in their class line by 8.30a.m. Timekeeping is generally excellent in SETNS and your continued co-operation in this regard is much appreciated. I would, however, encourage all parents/guardians to leave children in their lines when the first bell rings and to wait in the basketball court area behind the class lines. This facilitates classes and their teachers moving promptly into school.

Due to the poor weather last Tuesday, the Athletics meeting planned for Balheary was cancelled. Our pupils will have another opportunity to take part and Children will be informed of further details as they become available.

Open Evening for Pre-enrolled Junior infant Pupils 17th November

The Open Evening for Pre-enrolled Junior Infant Pupils was very well attended and first offers were posted out on Tuesday 27th November 2012. There was huge interest in securing places in our school and we look forward to meeting the parents/guardians for Junior Infants pupils September 2013 later in the school year.

PLEASE NOTE: our Enrolment Policy is on a First-Come, First-Served basis. The date on which a child is pre-enrolled determines when s/he is placed on the Pre-Enrolment List. We always recommend the earliest possible pre-enrolment. This process can be completed on hard copy (from the school office) or online at

Voluntary Contributions

The BOM would like to thank the parent/guardian body for voluntary contributions collected during November. Any outstanding contributions can be left into the school office.

Movember’ 2011

David and his 6th class pupils would like to thank you all for your Movember donations, collections continue this week. Well done to David, Eoghan, Karl and Peter for growing some fine moustaches and more importantly for generating increased awareness of Irish Cancer Society and Action Prostate Cancer charities.
